Find Spirit-Induced Refuge This Summer Within a Los Feliz Garden Oasis - Big Bar
Yes, we know. Summer is here, and it’s freaking hot. What is one to do in order to cool down on a sweltering July afternoon in Los Angeles when every move you make under the sun results in constant fatigue and a few, not-so-sexy sweat patches that cause your clothes to stick to you like glue? Perhaps one finds some precious AC to bask in, perhaps one takes a dip in the pool—but, if you're anything like us, one finds a cold cocktail to sip on.
Adjacent to the treat-filled counters of popular Los Feliz brunch spot, Alcove Cafe & Bakery, lies a haven of sinful tranquility—a place that even if you only stay for an hour, chances are, you’ll already feel completely at home within the first five minutes. For over a decade, Big Bar has beckoned as an inviting neighborhood favorite thanks to their tight-knit team of superlative bartenders and their fruitful arsenal of liquor, house-made syrups and garnishes made with only the freshest ingredients, and boozy accouterments galore. While their cocktail list ranges from the mildly classic to the wild and out of the ordinary, there's certainly something to be shaken or stirred to your liking, based on whatever you happen to be craving. You also have the option of either imbibing atop a barstool at their bright and parlor-esque bar counter, OR amongst the flora of their adjoined patio that may have you feeling like you've stumbled upon a boozy secret garden.
Our pal and bar manager of Big Bar, Cari Hah, has flourished as a bartender in the community for years, and since taking on the bar program at Big Bar, she has crafted both her cocktail menu and staff to be fun and approachable. With that being said, we've noticed a theme among fans of Big Bar: they come for the camaraderie of Cari and her team and stay for the cocktails.
Since we've been dealing with the heat in the only way we know how: you know, with a drink in hand, Cari mixed up a few perfect patio pounders to ease our summer gloom while digital director, bartender and veteran-jack of all trades of Big Bar, Eugene Lee, chatted with us and took a few snapshots of us in our natural habitat.
Without any further ado, let's get to sipping, yes?
First we examine R&R:
This one holds true to it's name with revitalizing and garden-fresh flavors of herbs and raspberry. R&R is made with muddled chervil, bergamot bitters, raspberry syrup, lemon juice, St George Raspberry Brandy, Edinburgh Rhubarb Ginger, and Hendrick's Gin, and is garnished with a raspberry and, you guessed it, more fresh chervil.
Gnome-ing into our hearts next, Pushing Daisies:
This little cutie may seem quiet and stoic on the outside, but inside he is mischievous with flavor. This effervescent gnomie is so easy to knock back, that he could be dangerous enough have you pushing up daisies by the evening if you start at brunch. Not really, maybe just pushing up your couch cushions for a nap, but you get the picture. Pushing Daisies is made with a house rosemary syrup, pear juice, lemon juice, St-Germain, Elyx Vodka, topped with Champagne and served in Felix, the copper Elyx gnome, who sits atop a patch of astroturf with a prideful daisy.
On the spritz-ier side of things, we have One in a Melon.
This glorious creation happened to be our favorite. We can we say? We're suckers for honeydew. Plus, a couple of these before lunch on a Saturday afternoon resembles what we imagine utter bliss to look and taste like. Like a face mask for your tastebuds, One in a Melon is mixed with Bianco Vermouth, Chareau, fresh honeydew juice, and topped with Champagne.
