Saying Farewell to the Lynchian Dining Experience of Our Dreams. - Bang Bang Bar
It’s only been a little over a week since we said our goodbyes to The Bang Bang Bar pop-up, aka The Roadhouse, aka every Twin Peaks fan’s heaven on Earth, and we’re already missing every chevron striped, melancholy bit of it. Tucked behind Melrose Umbrella Company in the former Barbara Jean space, this wall to wall dining experience took Melrose Ave to the creative beyond. Paul Salem, who put on the Double R Diner pop-up at the old Johnny Rocket's space on Melrose back in October, put careful consideration into every gritty detail of the cult classic.
The man behind the cocktails is Aaron Melendrez, who you may have seen bartending and consulting for some of the best bars in Los Angeles over the last decade. With his creativity and painstaking attention to detail, he rolled out an out of this world cocktail program, all with the Palmer’s, Agent Dale Cooper, and damn fine cherry pie in mind.
On top of having one of the most instagrammable cocktail menus ever to take Los Angeles by storm, we must take a moment to admire the food. Executive Chef David Lespron of Umbrella Hospitality is the man behind the out of this world dishes on the menu. From Betty Brigg’s Meatloaf Burger, to Jerry’s Baguette, to The Great Northern Steak and Frites, it was nearly impossible to choose.
Audrey Horne has left the building, ladies and gentlemen, but let's reminisce with some of our favorite cocktails, shall we?
“There’s a fish in the percolator!”
Labeled as, “A coffee cocktail black as midnight on a moonless night,” Fish in the Percolator, a proper kick in the behind, is made with Goslings Black Strap Rum, Wild Turkey Bourbon, cold brew, and maple syrup. Garnished with a Swedish Fish and served with a plate of mini pancakes, this called for the perfect after-dinner treat.
"Diane, I'm holding in my hand a small box of chocolate bunnies,"
The Diane. Simple, yet mysterious, but not quite an interesting cross between a saint and a cabaret singer. This refreshing Grey Goose martini is served on the rocks, presented with an orange twist and of course, six chocolate bunnies.
Oh Bob, everyone's favorite demonic entity from the Black Lodge. Causing chaos wherever he may go, and possessing unexpected victims throughout the series, this smoky, earthy libation will possess you, just not by any demonic means. Killer Bob is made with Ilegal Mezcal, Ancho Reyes, Black Beet Juice, pomegranate molasses, lemon juice, and thyme. We paired Bob with the Garmonbozia, creamed corn elote topped with pain and sorrow, of course. Get a load of that ice would ya?
Dr. Jacoby. You may question his morals, especially when it comes to his encounters with Laura Palmer, but we feel for you, doc. This one screams Hawaiian paradise, just as the man himself does. This two-in-one cocktail is made with one layer of Avuá Amburana Cachaça, grenadine, lime, pineapple juice, and coconut, and a layer of Appleton Estate Rum, lime, blue curaçao, and pineapple. Blended, stacked, and garnished with the works, you even get a small bowl of snack mix on the side! (Jacoby's hat not included)
To wrap it all up, we couldn't leave you hanging without mentioning good ol' Laura P. Laura Palmer, that is. Everyone's favorite dead damsel in distress, what would Twin Peaks be without her?
The Laura Palmer: Beautiful, sweet, yet not so innocent, is made with Grey Goose, strawberry lemonade, and berry tea.
We could go on forever about how much we wish we could have The Roadhouse right around the corner for the rest of our days, but every great pop-up must come to an end, or else, it wouldn't be a pop-up. However, you never know what the future may have in store!
